Your Health Comes First

Born to be a caregiver? If you are like me, you may have great joy from helping others. While helping others is a gift we strive to give others, we must remember to give this gift to ourselves. How do we take care of ourself? What does that mean?

I have been busy my entire life. I imagine you feel the same. Each decade brings new opportunities and new responsibilities. As the decades roll by, we may not think about our self care very often. When you receive a diagnosis things change.

Suddenly, the pause button is pushed and we are each forced to evaluate our current health and what we can do to be healthy and foster a healing environment. Our bodies are complex and our physical health is one component that receives a lot of attention when we are sick. However, we must also assess our emotional and spiritual health as we look for wholeness.

Now, I realize the importance of self care. I realize I must make exercise a priority in my week. I want to eat a healthy low sugar diet. I want to make sure joy is a part of my day. I realize that my walks are a time to meditate and pray as I take in the beauty of nature. I realize I can be a gift to others by a smile and smiling makes me happy.

Nothing is better than a great laugh with friends and family. Even in sad times, there are humorous moments to lighten your heart. In the end, I was alive and did hit get the boob job I hoped for…. But two bocce balls.
